VPCO in concert on May 3 performed the First Movement and the Finale  from Ludwig van Beethoven’s beloved Fifth Symphony. Listeners always recognize the familiar  dit-dit-dit-dah of the magnificent work.

Beethoven had already begun to lose his hearing when in his so-called “Middle Period” or “Heroic Period” he composed his Third through Eighth symphonies.

“Beethoven struggled over the Fifth for nearly a decade...In final form, the Fifth is a masterpiece not only of invention but of concision; …..not a single note of the Fifth could be improved,” according to Peter Gutmann, p.2, Classical Notes, 2001.
